Post Logged out while browsing
I am a brand new user and having logged in OK, I was browsing around, reading forum rules etc when I noticed I was no longer allowed to post and my user was not in the online list.
So I have made my first post a question as to why I was logged out and what I can do to prevent it in future.
Thanks Mik

This could be down to a security setting on your computer. Please check to see if you have cookies enabled.

Here's an explanation bit of text from our subscription site on cookies:

Quote:

THIS SITE USES COOKIES

Cookies are small text files created by a site and stored on your computer to tell the website information about you. The cookies on this site store the basket information for any orders. If you have tried to change the POST AREA and nothing has happened - or you have clicked 'Subscribe' on a title and the next page showing the shopping cart says £0 total - then your computer does not have cookies enabled.

TO ENABLE 'PER-SESSION' COOKIES

These are perfectly safe, and many sites require them to work properly.
From a Windows machine using Internet Explorer:
Click on TOOLS from menu bar
Click on INTERNET OPTIONS
Click on the SECURITY tab
Click on the CUSTOM LEVEL button on the page.
You will now see a list of options. Scroll down using the slide bar on right and find the COOKIES section.
There are two cookie options, 'store on computer' and 'per session'.
BOTH are safe, but if you want to be extra cautious, just enable 'per-session' cookies.
Click OK - you will see a confirmation box - Click OK.
Click OK on final page and go back to our INDEX page and try your order again

ON Firefox cookie settings are under Tools > Options > Privacy.

There is also a time-out, so if you're away from the screen for a length of time, the system may also log you out.

Cookies are enabled on my Mac OSX Firefox.

What is the timeout? This seemed to happen very quickly and it happened again later when I was in the middle of composing another post.

Thanks Mik

Did you tick the Remember me box below the logon details boxes?

Peter

thanks for your reply. I don't use the "log me on automatically..." tick box as being a retired computer user I don't like leaving logon details around.

I shall keep going and try to isolate the circumstances that trigger the logout.

Update -

I have worked out a way to prevent the timeouts. I am now creating any posts in a text editor and copy/pasting to the entry.
It appears I am now too slow to compose a message before timing out.

I am also doing all my browsing offline and only login to post.
