Celebrate the coming of spring with a day at historic Forde Abbey and see the magnificent carpets of crocus.

A cacophony of crocus

The beautiful Forde Abbey and gardens.

Sunday March 4th Forde Abbey Plant Fair:  This will be the third plant and gardening fair to be held in the grounds of  the picturesque, former Cistercian monastery, Forde Abbey, near Chard, on the Somerset/ Dorset border. With over 30 stalls selling plants and gardening accessories it is the perfect place to come to get your garden going in spring.  The FREE event has grown every year with over 1000 people attending last year.

Open: 10am – 4pm. Free entrance to plant fair, gift shop and tea rooms; normal garden admission applies for the 30 acre grounds.

Monday March 5th – 11th Forde Abbey Crocus Week: The carpets of crocus at Forde Abbey have to be seen to be believed! Now spreading over 10 acres with the abbey as a backdrop they make a stunning spectacle and are normally at the height of their flowering during the first two weeks of  March. The two predominant crocus are Crocus vernus and Crocus tommasinianus and with sensitive management involving leaving the lawns uncut well into the summer to allow the plants to seed  they have multiplied  into the extensive drifts seen today.

With a prolonged drought on the horizon for many gardeners this year - will your attitude to watering be affected? Which of these statements is most true for you?

I like to soak my crops regularly. Talk of drought doesn't bother me much.
I don't water at all once seedlings/young plants are established.
Water is short on my plot so I only water when absolutely necessary.
I water occasionally, but when I do give them a good soaking.
A likely prolonged drought has made me think about what I will grow this year and/or made me modify my techniques.
