Reconciling the seasons by Naomi Slade

30 August 2011.

It is a bit bad to be thinking ahead to winter – even though the press releases for Christmas presents have been arriving for a month now and I am just working up to writing my December copy for Kitchen garden.

Potatoes in pots - is it just hype? by Helen Gazeley

26 August 2011.

Some activities are just plain bizarre. And growing potatoes in pots, when you have a perfectly good vegetable patch, seems like one of them. Especially as they have less space to grow and need more watering.

Purple potatoes and paint pot primroses by Helen Babbs

17 August 2011.

The roof garden is currently bejeweled with flowers and looks very pretty. Tiny sapphire blue nigella flowers, caged within spiky green tendrils, are blooming in a shallow tray of dirt. Romantically known as love-in-the-mist, nigella seeds are edible and can be sprinkled onto salads or mixed into bread and cakes.

Big fish, botanicals and an Isle of Wight pickle frenzy by Naomi Slade

7 August 2011.

Art and Edibles at Hampton Court by Naomi Slade

11 July 2011.

Puppets, prison, peas and publication! by Helen Babbs

16 June 2011.

The roof is currently tangled with knotty vines and fragrant with the scent of sweet-peas. Alongside a rainbow of pea petals, raindrops ball and gleam on spinach leaves and purple potatoes plants sport stunning, long nosed blooms. The runners are clambering up their bean poles, salad leaves and herbs get bushier and more delicious by the day, and my tiny pepper and squash plants feel full of promise.

Blue tomatoes and mouldy melons by Steve Ott

9 June 2011.

All is ticking along nicely on the plot and in the greenhouse this week. I planted out my tomatoes and squashes about a week ago, which was a bit of a gamble but so far all seems OK although it hasn't exactly been warm. The leaves haven't tuned too blue!

Mystic Veg by Naomi Slade

1 June 2011.

As that Hannibal Smith off the A-Team would say, I love it when a plan comes together. But more than that I love it when my crystal ball is proves to be right.

Can gardening by the phases of the moon improve your crops?

Yes, definately. I've tried it and know it works.
I've never tried it, but intend to give it a go.
I have friends who use it and say it works for them.
It is utter nonsense.
I'm undecided.
