Vegan Veg: The pear tree comes a cropper
6 October 2011
When a couple of trees were damaged on the Stream Cottage plot Lonnie and Richard first turned the disaster to their advantage and then made plans to plant some new fruit trees.

Plant fruit - November is one of the best times for planting vines and fruit trees, and types that would be borderline for cropping well outside can thrive in a greenhouse or tunnel, helping to make even more productive use of the space.

Plant spring cabbages
If you sowed some spring cabbages back in July/August they should be ready for planting about now. This will give them time to establish roots before the onset of winter.
Tried and tasted... Broad beans

There are many broad bean varieties available, but do they vary much? Joe Maiden took a selection to trial, sowing them in late winter and recorded their yields and compared flavours.

In the kitchen, if you listen very carefully, it is probably possible to hear the gentle sobs of a man struggling to process the mound of vegetables that pile up inexorably on the kitchen doorstep. It’s time to sow hardy overwintering crops
There are several useful hardy crops that can be sown now for overwintering to give you early harvests in the spring. These include, claytonia (winter purslane, miner’s lettuce) and corn salad (lamb’s lettuce) such as ‘Louviers’, ‘Cavallo and ‘Vit’. Also winter spinach such as ‘Polar Bear F1’ and ‘Crocodile F1’. Choose a variety such as those mentioned which have a good resistance to downy mildew and which are slow to bolt.
