gardeners in the last few seasons due to the warm, wet conditions
that favour late-blight disease. And not just in U.K. but in N.E.
USA where even large growers have reported crop failure. It is
tragic on any scale when a heavy yield of green tomatoes gradually
rots before they have a chance to ripen as the blight arrives in mid
to late summer.

August can bring an abundance of tomatoes and other heat-loving crops, so be prepared to pick, pickle and freeze. Keep looking after the plants, however, so that they will continue to produce useful fruit well into the autumn.

Some years ago, when working at the Vegetarian Society cookery school, I was having a conversation with a couple of meat eating students who had come to learn how to cook for their newly vegetarian children. During this discussion, one stated that she had never eaten aubergine. Gleefully, I was able to turn the usual question non-meat eaters are asked on its head (‘What do you eat if you don’t eat meat’) by replacing the word ‘meat’ with ‘aubergine’.
