Time to prepare for winter in the garden

With weather forecasters warning that the UK may suffer from the coldest Winter in decades the Royal Horticultural Society is advising gardeners to get prepared.
'Rubens' Apple Wins ‘Britain’s Tastiest Apple Award

'Rubens' Apple has won the ‘Britain’s Tastiest Apple for the second consecutive year at the National Fruit Show (a trade event, held for the fruit producing industry). The 'Rubens' apple is grown exclusively in Kent and three growers were rewarded in the competition to find Britain’s tastiest apple in a clean sweep for the apple gaining 1st, 2nd, and 3rd spots in the competition.
Be toad-ally aware on bonfire night!

The Royal Horticultural Society and The Wildlife Trusts are asking bonfire night celebrators to look out for toads and frogs before they light their fires.
Ugly Pumpkin Creation wins First Prize

A Scunthorpe school has won first prize in a regional competition to grow and create the ugliest pumpkin. Pupils of Grange Lane Infant School took special care to grow the unusual seeds provided by Original Touch in their school vegetable garden before proudly harvesting the results of their hard work and decorating the green knobbly squash.
Rare plant blooms again

It is rare enough to see a Deptford Pink in bloom as these nationally scarce plants are hard to find, but to discover one blossoming into October is unheard of. These delicate pink flowers usually come out in June until August but at WWT London Wetland Centre they have been enjoying a second burst as England’s summer finally arrives, albeit rather late in the year.
