British tool manufacturer, Bulldog Tools, has agreed its support to the Royal Horticultural Society’s Campaign for School Gardening for a further 18 months.

Through a monthly prize draw, Bulldog Tools is offering 25 children’s rake and hoe sets to schools that successfully complete Level Two of the RHS campaign. In total 500 sets will be given out, equalling a support package worth over £10,000.

The RHS Campaign for School Gardening launched in 2007 and now has over 14,500 schools and education centres registered to it. The RHS believes gardening not only teaches children about the environment and where food comes from but also the life skills of responsibility, resilience and readiness to learn.

Each school that joins the campaign is encouraged to develop a garden and use it as a teaching resource for all its pupils. Teachers are asked to demonstrate how well the garden has been incorporated into school life by completing a benchmarking scheme which runs from level one to five, with prizes awarded at each level. Schools that reach Level Two, and so are eligible for a prize from Bulldog Tools, are able to demonstrate that work has begun on their garden.

Ruth Evans, Head of Community & Development at the RHS, said, “We are very grateful for the ongoing support that Bulldog Tools provide for this Campaign. These quality tools are highly valued by schools; every month 25 schools will benefit from fantastic new equipment that will help their pupils continue to learn and develop in the garden.”

Founded in 1780, Bulldog Tools is the only solid forged manufacturer of tools for the landscaping, farming and professional contractor business, in operation in Britain today. Over 2000 tools are made each day at its site in Wigan, including tools for children. In 2011, Bulldog Tools, along with designers John Wheatley and Mary Payne MBE, won a Gold medal at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show for the ‘Bulldog Tools Forge Garden’.

Stuart Elsom, Managing Director at Bulldog Tools, said, “It is wonderful to see children involved in gardening and I am pleased that Bulldog tools has been able to provide the tools for the job and continue it’s support for the RHS Campaign for School Gardening.”
