The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) encourages communities to get together gardening, and at RHS Garden Rosemoor's ever-successful Apple Day this year Community Orchards are the central theme. With an increasing interest by communities and groups in setting up their own orchards, Rosemoor will have all the help on hand to assist anyone in the cultivation of apples.

RHS Garden in Devon holds Apple Day on Sunday 7 October 2012

Apple days offer a great chance to try before you buy.

There will be apple displays from Rosemoor and Thornhayes Nurseries, as well as from the charity's flagship garden RHS Garden Wisley, which will help visitors to identify the apple varieties they have in their own gardens. If there is still doubt, apple experts will be on hand to assist as well as offering planting and cultivation advice.

When you have worked up an appetite, you can visit the apple tastings which will include some popular South West apples to help you decide which is both suitable for local conditions and tasty enough to grow in your own garden. Kevin Croucher from Thornhayes Nursery will host a talk and tasting session on dessert versus culinary apples. In addition,Dan Keech, of SUSTAIN and co-author of The Common Ground Book of Orchards, will be giving a talk on ‘Drinking to the Future; how grassroots activism is saving traditional orchards'.

Orchards Live will be present with its Apple Harvester to demonstrate how to take the backache out of apple collection and Westlake Farm will show how easy crushing apples can be with its portable cider mill.

In addition, there will be children's activities and trails, cookery demonstrations with recipe handouts, and stalls selling apple juice and cider together with other apple related foods and goods.

Rosemoor's award winning Garden Kitchen Restaurant will be offering a special Apple Day menu featuring fruit from the garden and a range of popular apple trees will be available to buy from The Rosemoor Shop and Plant Centre.

So come on down to Rosemoor on Apple Day and learn something new about apples.
