We wish you a merry Christmas and warmly welcome you to the JANUARY issue of Kitchen Garden, out nice and early for the festive season. It’ll soon be the start of a brand new year, and a new season in the garden, so relax with a cuppa and find out what’s hot on the plot!

Kitchen Garden editor Steve Ott writes: “It’s the beginning of a new year and we have a whole new gardening season to look forward to – the perfect antidote to what for many has been a rather gloomy time. “Deputy editor Emma Rawlings has 10 great ideas to make your veg plot more productive while fruit expert David Patch brings you the first of his timely two-part series which takes you back to basics with tree fruit – in plenty of time to order and plant your trees for 2021.

KG’s staff writer Tony Flanagan brings you a roundup of some of the best new seed introductions to be found in the new catalogues and on page 16 the whole team reveal the ones they will be growing. We’ll let you know how we get on later in the season.

“We are also very excited to announce the winners of our annual competition celebrating some of the lovely allotments and veg gardens of you, our readers. We were overwhelmed by the number of entries to our Plotter of the Month competition this year, many of whom were from gardeners who have only been growing veg since the first lockdown in March. To see how they have progressed in just a few short months was very humbling.

“This issue also sees the start of two great series as no-dig gardener Stephanie Hafferty turns her attention to gardening on a budget with some first-hand tips to help stretch your gardening pound. We also welcome Dr Anton Rosenfeld, knowledge officer for Garden Organic; Anton will be appearing every other month in KG to bring you a wealth of information on ways you can garden organically while at the same time staying in tune with the environment.”
