Who needs a seed tray? - Kitchen Garden Magazine

Within reason you can grow anything in just about anything. I tend to keep the plastic cartons that come with tomatoes and use them instead of seed trays – they have ready-made holes for a start and, as the seeds emerge, they allow in plenty of light.

So here are some ‘Costoluto Fiorentino’ tomato seeds I sowed last Sunday. They are a medium-sized Italian variety which produce lovely ribbed fruit.

They will need a temperature of 15-20C (59-68F) to germinate so if you have a heated propagator or a warm windowsill, they should be fine. The danger of sowing too early is that the seedlings don’t get enough light and become long and leggy. So leave till March if you prefer.
