The focus of this year’s Hedgehog Awareness Week (May 1-7), organised by the British Hedgehog Preservation Society, is firmly on gardeners
BHPS is asking gardeners to check areas carefully before using any machinery. They have produced a sticker to be placed onto machines, and are asking councils and tool hire companies to get in touch and request the free stickers for their machines.

= Ensure there is hedgehog access into and out of your garden by creating a 13 by 13cm (5 by 5in) gap in fences and walls.
= Move piles of rubbish to a new site before burning them.
= Ensure netting is kept at a safe height.
= Check compost heaps before digging the fork in.
= Do not use pesticides and other poisons (or use them less).
= Cover drains or deep holes.
= Ensure there is an easy route out of ponds and pools.
