Interest in home gardening grows amidst food shortages

Supermarket shortages mean that many people are looking to the growing opportunities in their own back gardens for the first time.

Demand for vegetable seeds has risen as supermarket continue to limit sales amidst shortages.

The Royal Horticulturist Society has said that seed sales in its retail outlets rose by 20% in February compared to last year, and Mr Fothergill’s Seeds said they sold nearly 50% more seeds through online sales than this time in 2022.

Seeds for fast-growing vegetables and herbs which can be started on a windowsill are proving particularly popular.

Google Data from this week showed that UK-based searches of “how to grow tomatoes” has grown by 909%.

Aldi, Asda, Morrisons and Tesco have all introduced limits, with Lidl joining them on Tuesday with a new policy on peppers, tomatoes and cucumbers of no more than 3 per person.

The shortage is being attributed to supply chain issues, as well as recent bad weather in Spain and North Africa.
