Extending the technology behind robotic vacuums and lawnmowers, Tertill patrols the garden, avoiding plants and obstacles while looking for weeds to eliminate. It distinguishes between weeds and plants on the basis of height; only plants short enough to pass under its shell activate the weed cutter. Special collars can be used to protect wanted plants until they are tall enough for Tertill to recognise.

Tertill charges itself, storing energy in a battery, and apparently needs no supervision. Four-wheel drive helps it move through soft soil, sand and mulch, and lets it climb slopes. The garden does need to be completely enclosed, however, to stop Tertill wandering off.
